Is there anything harder to find than a plain white t-shirt that isn't see through? This summer staple is the unicorn of ladies fashion!
So, when stores fail, we make it ourselves! The tricky thing is also finding white knit fabric that also ins't see through :) It might have been a risk but I ordered this white cotton interlock from fabric.com, I looked at a lot of white knit fabric for this project and read the reviews very closely. I think this was a decent quality fabric and very soft, though I also didn't find it to be fully opaque. With a nude bra worn underneath, it will be fine.
Update: scroll down for pics of my fancy velvet version too!
I used the Ellie and Mac Everyday Tee for my pattern. It comes in a loose fit and fitted version and has a nice curved hem. This pattern serged together on my trusty Brother 1034D really quickly and you could easily crank out a bunch of tees with it. It's really long and would be a good length to wear over leggings, though I'm almost 2 inches taller than the 5'6" it's drafted for, I didn't add any length and I still found it fairly long. In the next version, I might make it a little shorter. If you want a normal tee length rather than a tunic, shorten it.
I made the fitted version and it's still pretty roomy, so I wouldn't worry about it being too tight.
My only problem with the pattern, that I will need to fix for future makes, is the neckline is really wide! I will be moving it over a full inch because you will see both of my bra straps how it is drafted. I don't think I have especially wide shoulders, so keep this in mind if you decide to make this pattern up!
Kinda wrinkly! Before hemming and neckband. |
I hemmed the sleeves and bottom with my stretch twin needle and it worked like a charm.
Pretty good result for a a couple of hours work!
Update: For my second make of this pattern, I used a stretch velvet for an elevated every day look. This was one of my COVID-19 #stayhomeandsew makes, so it was key that it was comfy but looked good on a video chat.
The velvet I used was just barely 50% stretch, so the sleeves were a little tight on me. I am proud to say that I not only unpicked the underarm seam after I'd hemmed it but I drafted a gusset to make it fit much better on me.
Gusset! Yay for comfort :) |
