At this point, I have been thinking about and planning on making this jacket for a few months.I started by looking at examples of French jackets by channel, home sewists, other designers. For some examples for your own jacket, you can look here, here, here and here.
I haven't bought any fabric yet! Do you believe that? Normally I have fabric, patterns and projects piled up way in advance! I'm hoping to make a trip to NYC to go to Mood and maybe some of the local shops and pick something out in person. I often buy fabric online, which is sometimes a disaster so in this case as I will be spending a lot more on the fabric (I'm budgeting $200...but let's see how that goes!) I feel I need to make an in-person trip and frankly I haven't seen anything calling my name from my online browsing! I asked at a chain store I stopped at last night (I happened to drive by and they were having a sale!) and they did not even have any wool boucle. Eye roll. I wasn't surprised, even it was in season right now, I would have been shocked if they had any. c'est la vie!
From the photos of French jackets I've been looking at, I've been drawn primarily to the white/metallic jackets with contrasting trim but I spill things and this will be a dry clean only jacket...dangerous!
Given my propensity for messiness, I should probably err on the side of caution! The light blue metallics are also very appealing to me. E, my sewing teacher and yoda for this adventure, suggested considering how I want to pair it and what metals/jewelry I would wear with it.
I think I responded to this by saying, I did not have anywhere to wear the jacket anyway except the grocery store and it needed to match jeans!
Because I need a 1,000 hour jacket to wear to the grocery store.
Regarding pattern selection there is a fantastic array of pattern options at the Little French Jacket Sew Along. It's really a fantastic resource to see what is involved and give you some resources for help, especially if you're going it alone.
I chose vogue 7975 for my pattern and I'm planning to make look C but with a full length sleeve. I chose this pattern because it gave several options for a classic Channel look and E suggested a vogue pattern because they have good directions. I want to do welt pockets for this first attempt but depending on the fabric and trim I later choose I might want to go with the applied pocket, I sort of think matching it will be a pain in the rear so I'm kind of avoiding that but maybe I'll change my mind later.
E also suggested I choose a cuff style at the beginning as it will apparently "impact the internal structure" and brought me the Threads magazine article on Channel cuffs (subscription needed to read but there's a photo you can see). I choose the red one in the center without much curve as it was the more classic choice, maybe for the next jacket, I'll choose something more modern and go a little wild!
