Ellie & Mac Around the Block Hoodie - pattern review

The Ellie & Mac Around the Block Hoodie is definitely a fan favorite and I can totally see why, it is a really elevated hoodie look.

Here is the scoop on my experience making my first one!
Inspector Pikachu makes sure I have the right pieces.

Alterations

I made very few alterations, really just grading for size. I measure a Large bust and XL waist/hip but based on my experience in making the E&M Lucky Girl and it having more tummy ease that I wanted, I looked at the size of the pattern pieces and decided to make a straight Large for the body. It's more of a fitted hoodie look than a big comfy hoodie. I may or may not grade to an XL next time depending on what I'm going for.

I also graded the sleeve to an XL from the Large size because I have larger arms and feel like the sleeves on my E&M Going Home Sweater are too tight. I am really happy with the sleeve changes but next time I'm going to grade the armhole up too.

Maybe I should just be making a XL and grading the bust down?☺

Grommets
Honestly I didn't make this for a while because the grommets were intimidating. When it came down to it, it wasn't a big deal. I did put mine in backwards but they still looked fine, I didn't want to waste fabric re-cutting my hood piece, and re-do my patch, so I just put them in backwards.

I bought this grommet kit and I watched the video included on how to install them about 5 times. Now I might put them on everything because, why not? I have a bunch!
It should go in like this.
Directions
Generally the directions for this pattern are good, as expected from the other E&M patterns I have made. However, there are a few areas where I think the directions aren't 100% clear. If you are planning to make this pattern, I hope these tips are helpful for you!

1) The sleeve cuff - the directions have you fold the sleeve cuff in half but they don't tell you which way. I looked at my cuffs and they are actually the same length both directions for the size I used. When you fold, you want the most stretch to be going around your sleeve (at least I would). I would suggest making a notch or dot when you cut your fabric to make this easier.

Now maybe it doesn't matter much as you're supposed to use 50% 4 way stretch knit but if you are like me, you might bend that rule a little for the vertical stretch or your horizontal stretch will be much higher.

2) The hood attachment - so I messed this one up, which you can see on my finished garment (I might fix it...we'll see!) but hopefully you can learn from me. The directions don't specify which part of the hood should be on top of the overlap when you attach it, so I did what seemed most logical to me at the time and my grommets are in the wrong place because I overlapped the wrong way.
See how weird is is?
So you will want to have your hood clipped all the way around and then where it overlaps in the front your sandwich should be: body fabric, hood section with lower grommet, hood section with upper grommet.

Other than these two little issues, I had a very smooth sewing process! I have in mind an Around the Block Hoodie dress hack already!

George and Ginger 40k Sway - Pattern Review

Final product - 40k Sway George and Ginger Patterns gave the 40k Sway pattern away to celebrate having 40,000 members in their Facebook group. Look at how cute that neckline is? Of course I had to make this super cute freebie. As an extra bonus, there are directions for making a functional placket opening or faux opening. I opted for the faux placket because it's marginally easier and I have no reason that I need the opening to work but if you needed access to a port or to breastfeed, this top design would be great! I measure a size L12 (full bust 38") but I was at the top of the size range and worried it wouldn't fit in my arms so I decided to go up to an L14 and graded out to an XL16 hip. I checked my fabric stretch before sewing it as I was using a French Terry which is not always very stretchy. My fabric had 50% horizontal stretch and minimal vertical stretch (maybe 10%); the pattern says it needs 50% 2-way stretch so I thought I would be fine. Um.....no....It was way

George and Ginger Little Black Bra - pattern review

I have been obsessed with the George and Ginger Lovesick Bralette {now called the Little Black Bra} for the last few weeks. I have made 3   5  a million of them in these past few weeks! I've been sewing up a storm during the Shelter-in-Place orders from COVID-19 and thee bralettes have been perfect to wear when lounging around or working from home. This is the first and at this point, the only bra I have ever made. This pattern was really attractive to me because I didn't need any special supplies, I could make it from fabric I already had. I actually made all of these from swim/athletic knit scraps I had left over. Also, it's a free pattern! If you go the the George and Ginger Facebook group , you can download the pattern for free. It's available in sizes 29AA-48E. Since I used swim fabric, I could also wear these as swimsuit tops. I might make some solid black swim bottoms so I can wear whatever tops I feel like wearing. Pattern tips I never print my patterns

M7313 and E&M Lucky girl mash up!

Last week I made the Ellie & Mac Lucky Girl top ( pattern can be purchased here ) with the split sleeve (style 1) and I really loved the outcome (see it here)  but of course, I also wanted to make the tie sleeve version (style 2). I was looking at the fabric I had available and most of it was double brushed poly (DBP) which doesn't look nice on the back side (usually it's white on the back, printed on one side only), so I knew I’d want to line my sleeves. Last week, I decided to make the split sleeve version because how I was going to construct the lined sleeve was still percolating a little bit but now, I was ready to go! Despite my plan to make more separates this year, I had 3 yards of the fabric I wanted to use and opted to make a dress. I can’t help it, I just love dresses! It’s one garment to have a whole new outfit. The E&M Lucky Girl has a dress option but it’s a sheath style and I decided I would prefer a bodice + skirt option. McCall’s 7313 is a patter
