Why am I doing this?

About a year and a half ago, I took my first sewing class and after practicing making straight lines, I made a drawstring pouch. I fell in love! But I wanted to make clothes, not end up with 90 bags in the closet. I bought a sewing machine, and was rapidly taking sewing classes every weekend.

Saying that I bit off more than I could chew, is something of an understatement...in the first few months, I took a "working with patterns" class and decided to make a dress with something like 14 pieces and that I wanted to put pipping on it. If you are new to sewing, the patterns they label as "easy" are NOT easy. I think they literally label everything that way. Eye roll.

The working with patterns class was a 6 class series and I also worked on my project at home as much as possible. When it was done, it did not fit at all. I took an additional 2 open studio classes to get the thing to fit and cursed pipping every minute of every one of them, because it made adjusting the fit a royal pain in the ass!

Now, after a year more of experience, I'm again diving in and have decided to spend the next few months making a Channel style jacket, something of a holy grail for home sewists. Why am I doing this? I am hoping to learn something, not go crazy in the process and end up with a fabulous jacket that I could never afford to buy!

Dress project with the pain in the ass pipping!

George and Ginger Little Black Bra - pattern review

I have been obsessed with the George and Ginger Lovesick Bralette {now called the Little Black Bra} for the last few weeks. I have made 3   5  a million of them in these past few weeks! I've been sewing up a storm during the Shelter-in-Place orders from COVID-19 and thee bralettes have been perfect to wear when lounging around or working from home. This is the first and at this point, the only bra I have ever made. This pattern was really attractive to me because I didn't need any special supplies, I could make it from fabric I already had. I actually made all of these from swim/athletic knit scraps I had left over. Also, it's a free pattern! If you go the the George and Ginger Facebook group , you can download the pattern for free. It's available in sizes 29AA-48E. Since I used swim fabric, I could also wear these as swimsuit tops. I might make some solid black swim bottoms so I can wear whatever tops I feel like wearing. Pattern tips I never print my patterns...

Ellie and Mac South Shore Romper pattern review

Hello sewing friends! I have been sewing up a storm but blogging about it has taken a back seat, I have a lot of new projects and some past ones, that I can update with more photos of new versions. Stay tuned for more! Today, I'm going to give you the low-down on Ellie and Mac's popular South Shore Romper . I was really slow to warm to this pattern, despite it looking cute on everyone! I made it last year for the first time with a lot of enthusiasm but I HATED the outcome of mine but people kept posting cute ones online over and over again so I finally decided to give it another try. It might not have happened if we hadn't been under a shelter-in-place order for the last month because of the COVID-19 outbreak; it's amazing how much sewing I can get done when basically all socializing is cut off. When I go back to work, I will probably have a month's worth of new outfits to wear. So this was my horrible version from last year...sorry for the bathroom mirror s...

George and Ginger 40k Sway - Pattern Review

Final product - 40k Sway George and Ginger Patterns gave the 40k Sway pattern away to celebrate having 40,000 members in their Facebook group. Look at how cute that neckline is? Of course I had to make this super cute freebie. As an extra bonus, there are directions for making a functional placket opening or faux opening. I opted for the faux placket because it's marginally easier and I have no reason that I need the opening to work but if you needed access to a port or to breastfeed, this top design would be great! I measure a size L12 (full bust 38") but I was at the top of the size range and worried it wouldn't fit in my arms so I decided to go up to an L14 and graded out to an XL16 hip. I checked my fabric stretch before sewing it as I was using a French Terry which is not always very stretchy. My fabric had 50% horizontal stretch and minimal vertical stretch (maybe 10%); the pattern says it needs 50% 2-way stretch so I thought I would be fine. Um.....no....It was way...
